Breakthrough coronavirus infections can cause long COVID

A new study suggests that long COVID can develop following breakthrough infections in vaccinated individuals. 

Researchers at the Oxford University in the U.K. analyzed the data of around 20,000 U.S. COVID-19 patients. Half of these patients had been vaccinated. In comparison with the unvaccinated patients, those who had been fully vaccinated, especially those below the age of 60 years, had lower risks for death and serious complications, such as lung failure, requirement of mechanical ventilation, admission to ICU, life-threatening blood clots, seizures, and psychosis. 

However, the researchers noted that prior vaccination does not seem to have a protective effect against several previously known outcomes of COVID-19, such as long COVID, arrhythmia, sleep disorders, joint pain, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and mood and anxiety disorders.
